Art.Rage.Us.,
an exhibit of art and writing by women with breast cancer, opened
in San Francisco on April 24, 1998. For the first time, The Breast
Cancer Fund, the San Francisco chapter of the Susan C. Komen Breast
Cancer Foundation and the Bay Area regions of the American Cancer
Society have joined together to sponsor the largest-ever breast
cancer art exhibit on the West Coast.
Art.Rage.Us. is an exhibition of mixed media art and
writing by women who have faced breast cancer. The exhibit, which
represents more than 75 professional and non-professional artists
and writers from the U.S., Canada and Europe, ran through June 14
at the San Francisco Main Library, Jewett Gallery. There also were
also five satellite exhibits throughout the Bay area.
The
show's formal opening on April 24 was hosted by Jill Eikenberry,
award-winning actress and her husband, actor Michael Tucker (both
formerly of TV's LA Law). Also attending the gala was
U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer and local news
reporter Faith Fancher.
The
show has been such as success that it has continued to to travel
and show in additional venues and there are currently plans for
shows into the year 2002!
Art.Rage.Us.
presents deeply moving and beautiful expressions from women with
breast cancer, along with intensely personal statements that provide
a window into their hearts and minds", says Susan Claymon,
Project Coordinator. "The project has been an incredible team
effort over the last two years, giving us a major opportunity to
increase public awareness about this devastating disease.
A
176-page commemorative book
with all selected writings and color reproductions of the art, now
in its second printing, is published by Chronicle
Books
in collaboration with the Art.Rage.Us. organizers. The book is available
directly from Chronicle Books' web site (linked above), many book
stores internationally or the Breast Cancer Fund (800-487-0492).
More than 30 educational events were held in conjunction with the
Art.Rage.Us. exhibit.
"The
voices contained within Art.Rage.Us. are brave and powerful and
beautiful, " says acclaimed author Terry Tempest Williams,
who wrote the book's epilogue. "Most importantly these creative
renderings, through story and imagery, set a collective healing
in motion that transcends personal pain."
According
to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most frequently
diagnosed cancer among women, accounting for one out of every three
female cancer diagnoses in the United States. It is the leading
cause of cancer death for women between the ages of 25 and 54. The
incidence of breast cancer has greatly increased in the last fifty
years, and, as yet, there is no cure.
  Art.Rage.Us. was inspired
by the desire to raise awareness about breast cancer and its devastating
impact on families and to build community support for the disease.
All proceeds from the exhibit will be divided equally among the
three sponsors and used to support research, education, patient
support and policy action for breast cancer.
The
Breast Cancer Fund is a national non-profit organization working
to find better ways to detect and treat, and ultimately prevent
breast cancer, while ensuring that the best possible medical and
psychological care is available to women living with the disease.
The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is a volunteer organization
devoted to raising and allocating funds for breast cancer research,
education and awareness, screening and treatment in the six Bay
area counties. The American Cancer Society is a community-based
volunteer organization fighting cancer through research, education,
advocacy and service to cancer patients and their families.
